What is craniosacral therapy?

Craniosacral Therapy (CST) is a gentle yet deep body and mind therapy which has been developed from osteopathy principles and is informed by neuroscience and pain research. Using a light touch and verbal dialogue, the therapist support the body's capacity for self-repair by releasing embodied tensions. It has been evidenced to reduce a wide range of health problems including physical and psychological issues, pain, anxiety and trauma.

What to expect?

Picture
Generally practised on an adjustable treatment table (other options are available such as chairs or the use of props), always fully clothed.

The therapy works through light touch, without manipulation, with the listening skills of the therapist’s hands. This process is supported by a verbal interaction between client and therapist as they track the bodily sensations that emerge, such as heat, tingling or pulsating sensations.

As the session progresses, it is likely that your nervous system slows down and that the body begins to reorganise itself towards recovering flow and vitality that underlies health and wellbeing. During and/or after a session you may feel more relaxed with increased clarity of mind and an overall feeling of well-being.

As it is so gentle, CST is suitable for people of all ages including babies, children, adults including older people.

Quiet friend who has come so far,
feel how your breathing makes more space around you.
Let this darkness be a bell tower and you the bell.
As you ring, what batters you becomes your strength.
Move back and forth into the change.
What is it like, this intensity of pain?
If the drink is bitter, change yourself to wine.
In this un-containable night,
be the mystery at the crossroads of your senses,
the meaning discovered there.
And if the world has ceased to hear you,
say to the silent earth, I flow.
And to the rushing waters speak, I am

My background
MA PhD BCST

Having worked in dance as a choreographer, performer and researcher for over 20 years before becoming a craniosacral therapist, my approach is informed by my own experience in somatic, body/mind-based practices including yoga, shiatsu, meditation and movement improvisation.

My work draws on the principles of biodynamics which I have studied with Steve Haines during my training with Body College in London. The main difference with other CST practices is a focus on a slower touch. As a biodynamic therapist, I offer longer holds of the body with respect to the natural rhythms of my client’s body. This is sometimes called a relational or meditative touch.

"
In the dynamic of relational touch, there is the potential for new feelings, new stories and new meanings to arise. Truth emerges as a shared story between client and therapist, informed by phenomena of being within a sensitive organism. We aim to generate concepts that promote health and sensations of joy, ease and agency." Steve Haines, 2018

Since completing my training in 2024, I see clients in Upper Sydenham in London. I also offer free sessions as a volunteer at Better Lives, an integrated drug and alcohol service delivered by the North London NHS Foundation Trust.

Alongside my clinical practice, I continue to work as a dance teacher and researcher in educational and health settings. As a dance teacher I aim to develop socially engaged individuals ready to lead the future of dance. I enjoy working both as a dance educator and therapist. Each practice informs the other and deepens my fascination for the body, its movements and its potential for change. I will shortly be starting a new permanent position as Dance Lecturer at the Rambert Dance School in London.
